SUMMARY:The next Monday night lecture on the 1st of November is on The Corpsman’s Experience in Vietnam
DESCRIPTION:During the Vietnam War\, Michael Kuklenski was assigned to a group of Marines.  A deeply religious man\, Kuklenski served as a conscientious objector\, refusing to carry a gun with him into combat zones.  On May 29\, 1969\, his group was attacked.  Despite being wounded on three separate occasions\, Kuklenski continued to treat his wounded Marines and did not stop helping until all of the wounded men had been moved to safety.  For his heroic actions that night\, Kuklenski was awarded the Silver Star. \nSteve Vineyard\, a lifelong friend of Kuklenski’s was assigned to a Marine Reconnaissance Unit.  He performed minor surgeries frequently while in the country\, working hard to assist men so they did not have to visit battalion aid stations.  Steve Vineyard earned a Purple Heart while working to save lives in Vietnam. \n \nThe Lecture will begin at 6:00pm at the museum located 1346 Bluff Street\, Muskegon\, Michigan. If you are unable to attend in person\, please contact Teresa Folkmier at tfolkmier@silversidesmuseum.org for the zoom link. The cost for attendance is $5.00 and of course\, members are always free.

SUMMARY:March 14\, 2022\, Fred Johnson - Doolittle and the USS Hornet

Doolittle’s 16 planes dropped their bombs and then\, lacking fuel to return to their carrier\, flew on to crash-land in China and the Soviet Union. \n \nFred Johnson\, History Professor Hope College\nThe Lecture Series will begin at 6 PM at the museum located at 1346 Bluff Street\, Muskegon\, Michigan. Upon\ncompletion of his graduate exams in 1995\, he journeyed back to the mountains to teach at USU\,\nwork assistant editor of the Western Historical Quarterly\, and write a dissertation. With a Ph.D.\ngranted by ASU in 1999\, Heaton landed a job on the frozen far north campus of the University of\nAlaska Fairbanks. He drove the Alaska Highway during the summer of 2000 in a U-Haul with\nsix barking dogs in the back of a pickup hitched behind. Upon his promotion to associate\nprofessor in 2006\, Heaton became the chair of the History Department and has served in that\npost ever since. He continues to\nchair the History Department with a telecommuting contract and now complains about the cold\nsouthern winters.
