SUMMARY:Museum Ships Weekend 2023
DESCRIPTION:Join us for Museum Ships Weekend! MUSEUM SHIPS WEEKEND is an Amateur Radio Special Event in which amateur radio operators and clubs set up amateur radio stations at museum ship sites to communicate with other amateur radio stations to commemorate\nthe represented vessels.\nThe event is held annually the first weekend in June and is open to Museum Ships/Museums world wide. In 2022\, 89 ships from the US\, Canada\, Germany\, Russia\, Sweden\, Belgium\, Austria\, Australia\, Spain\, Italy and France were registered for the Event.\nThe current run of participation by the USS Silversides has been continuous since 2017 with the exception of 2020 when the event was cancelled due to Covid.\nIn the 2022 Event\, 263 contacts were made by the USS Silversides Station (N8SUB)\, representing 40 states\, Canada and Puerto Rico. A total of 25 OSL* requests were received and answered.\nThe 2023 Event is scheduled for June 3 and 4\, 2023. The “crew” consisting of Dennis Dufford (W8VN)\, Matt Kervin (KE8QQB)\, Kirk Nygren (KO8Z)\,\nand Stacy Van Buren (W8SEV) are looking forward to another year of “activating” the USS Silversides (N8SUB).\nInformation and event sponsored by\nThe Battleship New Jersey Amateur Radio Station

DESCRIPTION:Chuck Veit\, President Emeritus of Navy & Marine LHA \nPresenting via ZOOM \nTopic:  The First Submarines in the U.S. Navy\, 1861-1863 \nSummary:  His group is working towards pinpointing the location of the very first submarine in the Civil War. (Yes\, years before CSS Hunley.) Unlike more daunting expeditions to find boats sunk deep in the ocean\, this one lies but some twenty feet down in the muddy riverbank of a tributary of the Delaware. Low-level scans of the rather treacherous area indicate an anomaly that bears all the indications of a sunken mass of the right size and shape to be the 1859 submarine we are seeking.
