SUMMARY:March 14\, 2022\, Fred Johnson - Doolittle and the USS Hornet
DESCRIPTION:The early days of WWII in the Pacific brought bad news every day. America needed a win and quickly. In walks\, James Harold “Jimmy” Doolittle (1896-1993) was a pioneering pilot\, aeronautical engineer\, combat leader\, and military strategist whose career stretched from World War I to the height of the Cold War. In the\nsummer of 1991\, he earned a BA in History at the rainy campus of Portland State University.\nThen\, he headed southeast to study the West and earned a MA at the high-altitude Utah State\nUniversity campus. Days after successfully defending his thesis\, in the summer of 1993\, he\ntrekked south to begin a PhD at the sizzling Arizona State University campus in Tempe. Upon\ncompletion of his graduate exams in 1995\, he journeyed back to the mountains to teach at USU\,\nwork assistant editor of the Western Historical Quarterly\, and write a dissertation. With a Ph.D.\ngranted by ASU in 1999\, Heaton landed a job on the frozen far north campus of the University of\nAlaska Fairbanks. He drove the Alaska Highway during the summer of 2000 in a U-Haul with\nsix barking dogs in the back of a pickup hitched behind. Upon his promotion to associate\nprofessor in 2006\, Heaton became the chair of the History Department and has served in that\npost ever since. He also served as the executive director of the Western History Association from\n2012-2017 and as an associate dean in the College of Liberal Arts.\nAfter the publication of his book The Shoshone-Bannocks: Culture and Commerce at Fort Hall\,\n1870-1940 (U. Press of Kansas\, 2005) Heaton began a NSF funded research project on\nAthabascans of the Interior Alaska and has published articles on that topic. He teaches a variety\nof courses\, including Alaska History\, and published a book titled Outlaw Tales of Alaska. He is\ncurrently working on a research project about Al Jolson’s USO tour of Alaska in 1942 just after\nthe Japanese bombed Dutch Harbor\, Alaska.\nIn 2020\, after twenty years in Fairbanks\, Dr. Heaton moved his family across the continent in the\nmiddle of a pandemic to the more hospitable climate of Huntsville\, Alabama. He continues to\nchair the History Department with a telecommuting contract and now complains about the cold\nsouthern winters.

SUMMARY:April 25\, 2022 Ron Janowski- MacArthur’s Return to the Philippines
DESCRIPTION:During World War II’s Pacific Campaign\, General Douglas MacArthur\, along with his family\, were located on the island of Corregidor where he oversaw more than 90\,000 American and Filipino troops in the battle against the Japanese military. As neighboring strongholds fell to the Japanese\, U.S. President Franklin Roosevelt grew concerned that Corregidor would also fall and MacArthur\, a well-respected leader\, would be captured or killed. General MacArthur balked at the President’s request to leave the island\, but when he was ordered to do so\, he had to oblige. When he left\, MacArthur vowed\, “I Shall Return.” And he did—On October 20\, 1944!\n\n\n\nThe Lecture Series will begin at 6PM at the museum located 1346 Bluff Street\, Muskegon\, Michigan. If you are unable to attend in person\, please contact Teresa Folkmier at tfolkmier@silversidesmuseum.org for the zoom link.
