The Mission of the USS Silversides Submarine Museum is to honor the men and women of the military, preserve military history and provide experiences that educate the public about past and present military history and technology.
The USS Silversides Submarine Curator is responsible for overseeing the maintenance activities of a World War II Gato-class submarine and the 1920s Coast Guard Cutter. Some other facility maintenance may be necessary. This role requires a skilled individual with a strong background in marine vessel maintenance, museum studies, and history.
The USS Silversides Submarine Curator's responsibilities include creating and executing preventative maintenance plans for all specified areas/vessels, budget management, project management, and volunteer oversight.
This role will report to the Director of Curatorial Services and work with designated Committees to carry out the institution’s overall objectives.
The ideal candidate will have strong knowledge of marine vessel systems and/or equipment maintenance – excessive knowledge of Gato-class submarines is not necessary, although helpful, but the ability to learn quickly regarding in depth systems will be necessary. A strong background in museum studies, restoration, and preservation is necessary.
The USS Silversides Submarine Museum is located on the South side of the channel between Lake Michigan and Muskegon Lake near Pere Marquette Beach.
From I-96: I-96 ends in Muskegon and continues into Downtown as Business 31. Stay on Business 31 North until you reach Laketon Avenue. Head west on Laketon Avenue and follow the Laketon Avenue directions below.
From US-31: Take US-31 until you reach Laketon Avenue. Head west on Laketon Avenue and follow the Laketon Avenue directions below.
From M-46: Take M-46 (Apple Avenue) to downtown Muskegon. Turn right onto Terrace Blvd. and continue to Business 31 heading south to Laketon Avenue. Head west on Laketon Avenue and follow the Laketon Avenue directions below.
Laketon Avenue Directions: Continue west on Laketon Ave. Laketon Ave. turns into Lakeshore Drive. Continue west on Lakeshore Drive and keep left at the “Y” at Latitude Party Store. Lakeshore Drive turns into Beach St. Follow Beach St. and keep right at the next “Y”. The road name changes to Fulton and you will see USS SILVERSIDES Submarine Museum on the left and USS Silversides moored in the channel. Turn left into the driveway. You have arrived.
