USS Silversides Museum

Restore a Piece of History

USS Silversides is one of the most decorated submarines of World War II. “USS Silversides – 236 in Battle” by George Hrsuka is a visual tribute to that legacy, and with your help, it will continue to inspire all who see it.

This is your chance to play a role in preserving that story.

The Story Behind the Artwork

George Hruska (1893 – 1970) attended the Art Institute of Chicago, where he studied under the renowned artists John H. Vanderpoel, Dudley C. Watson, Louis Wilson, and Anton Sterba. He went on to study portrait painting in Munich, Germany.

After Hruska served in World War I, he went back to his work as an artist and even exhibited some of his work at the Century of Progress World’s Fair in Chicago during 1933 and 1934.

This painting depicts what it might have been like for the USS Silversides – 236 and the elements the crew was up against.

This powerful painting of USS Silversides captures more than a submarine, it captures the bravery, sacrifice, and spirit of the crew who served aboard her during World War II.

Over time, the artwork has suffered from fading, discoloration, and surface damage. Without restoration, these details, and the story they tell, risk being lost.

By restoring this piece, we are not just preserving paint on canvas, we are preserving history.
